Monumental Sculpture for Ultima Thule Lodge

Ultima Thule Installed On Location

Gleaming White With Long Golden Horns

Dall sheep are the iconic species of one of the greatest wilderness regions left on earth. The Wrangell-St. Elias, Glacier Bay, and Kluane National Parks along with the Tatshanshini-Alsek Provincial Park combine to cover over twenty-four million acres. The largest protected continuous wilderness area in the world. It is a land of enormous mountains, icefields, and grinding glaciers; falling off to tundra, boreal forests, and tremendous river valleys.

When asked to create a sculpture for the beautiful grounds at the Ultima Thule Lodge, I chose to place a spectacular ram on a tall pedestal of rock to convey the essence of this land that literally contains some of the most vertical country in all of North America. Mount St. Elias itself has the most vertical climb of any mountain in the world. At over 18,000 feet it literally descends right to sea level at Icy Bay. The Lodge is located on the Chitina River deep within Wrangell St. Elias National Park. It is a land of immense proportions and unimaginable beauty.
